It seems to me that I try, but don&#8217;t always succeed. I am not going to tell you what not to do, but I am going to suggest something proactive to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an artist, I am a member of a community of countless people trying to follow their passion and put more beauty in the world. We make, we try to sell, we struggle with social media and other avenues of advertisement, and sometimes we worry and doubt. It is a viscious cycle, I assure you. But the joy of making, the need of making always seems to win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, the most meaningful gifts I have purchased thus far have come from another artist. A potter in Newport, RI, a glass artist in Illinois, another artist in New York&#8230; you get the idea. My purchases to big box organizations mean nothing to them. My purchases from these artists mean they can pay their rent, or feed their family, or pay for the incredible costs that go with health care when you own your own business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am reminded of the quote, &#8220;Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.&#8221; \u2013Ryunosuke Satoro<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am not going to tell you to black out any big box store for the next week (although that would be great and powerful!) I am going to suggest you put your money into small businesses. People that work so darn hard. People whose hours are not 40 a week, but much, much more. Consider spending time to locate an artist, an independent store, or other small business.
